‘Spiorad Signals’ is the school's newsletter. It has been an integral part of the school's communication apparatus for many years. It is normally published towards the end of each term. It is a comprehensive collection of school happenings, particularly extracurricular activities. In addition to the information it provides on individual activities, it also points up the sheer range and volume of things going on in the school at any one time. In the future it is envisaged that an archive of editions will be built up and be available to download.

CSN’s interest in the Munster Championships came to an end last week. The Under 18’s played St. Pauls, Waterford, in the semi-final at the CIT grounds in atrocious weather conditions. A Noel Cotter goal neutralised St. Paul’s early lead, but, inspired by a spectacular goal, a very impressive St. Pauls finished deserving winners on a 4-1 scoreline. The Under 14’s played Coláiste Mhuire, Cobh, in the quarter final and were unfortunate not to make a breakthrough in normal and extra time having played the better football. The tie was decided by a dramatic penalty shootout which Cobh won 10-9.
Well done to both the Under 18s and 14s for their dedication and efforts during the campaign. The Under 16s began the Cork Cup campaign with an impressive 7-0 victory against Kinsale Community School. Emmet Ryle got a hat-trick and the other goals came from Kevin O’Mullane, Ross McSweeney, Adam McGee and Alan O’Donovan. CSN will play Deerpark CBS in the quarter final.
The Under 14’s are drawn against Christian Brothers College in the first round of the Cork U 14 Cup. Best wishes to both teams for those games.
Meanwhile, in breaking news, rumours of a rift in the Teachers’ Soccer squad are completely unfounded according to team captain, Mr. O’Mahony. “It’s a case of wishful thinking by the Sixth year teams, really. One of our players has been sent to a nutritionist but it’s purely a precautionary measure.” The first round, involving ten student teams, was completed before mid-term. The defeated teams now progress to what has uncharitably been described as a “Losers” round, with the final to be played before Easter. Seán Davin’s team, “51/2 men”, advanced after beating Tom Dunton’s squad comprehensively. Captain Davin commented, “I feel we have really grown in stature after that win.” Shane Tobin’s team were narrowly beaten by Shane Spillane’s half dozen. Tobin confounded his critics by not going down with cramp during the match. The last game of the series was hotly contested between Peter O’Callaghan’s “Super-Cally-fragilisticexpialedocious” team and Darren Delea’s weakened “Double D’s”, with the former emerging victorious on a 15-2 score-line. The “Be-Hinds” lived up to their name, just pipping former Senior Captain Dave Philpott’s team at the final whistle. Team “Wiley Coyote” booked their place in the quarter finals, beating “ I’m from Togher, get me out of here”, captained by Steve O’Donoghue.

| Academic Awards 2009 |
Is ócáid ar leith í i saol an choláiste nuair a thagann pobal an choláiste le chéile chun gaiscí acadúla na ndaltaí a cheiliúradh. I mbliana, thángamar le chéile ar oíche Dé hAoine 27ú Samhain. Cuireann sé áthas i gcónaí orainn fáilte ar ais a chur roimh na daltaí speisialta seo atá tar éis sinn a fhágaint. Chomh maith le sin, tá súil againn go spreagfaidh eachtraí na ndaltaí seo na buachaillí ar fad sa scoil.
Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh confers two very prestigious yet quite different awards on its finest students. Earlier in the year, in May immediately following their graduation ceremony a select group of 6th Year students were presented with a much-coveted Gradam. That award acknowledges, among other things, the recipient’s contribution to the life of the school through the demonstration of positive leadership, the enhancement of the good name of the school and the engendering of an esprit de corps among the student body. The Academic Awards are quite distinct. With these awards, we acknowledge the success of our immediate past-pupils in the Leaving Certificate examinations and of our current 4th Year students in the Junior Certificate examinations held the previous June. This year, some eighteen students were honoured for their academic achievements. Each of these boys received a gold medal (at Leaving Certificate level) or a framed certificate (at Junior Certificate level).
The Academic Awards Ceremony is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the school calendar and this year was particularly pleasant as we were welcoming back our esteemed former Principal, Mr. Denis Kennedy. We were also delighted to welcome back to Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh An tUas. Pádraig Ó Ríordáin, one of our most illustrious past-pupils, who was our guest speaker for the evening. Pádraig, a corporate lawyer of international stature, is a graduate of both UCC and one of the most prestigious law schools in the United States, the Harvard Law School. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Union Internationale des Jeunes Advocats and the Harvard Law School Association. In the course of an address in which he offered us intriguing insights into the character of his former classmate Barack Obama, he also reminisced on his days as a pupil here in Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh. He spoke with great fondness and pride of his old school and maintained that the values that have most stood to him in the course of his career were not those which we might cynically presume to be prerequisites for a successful legal career but were, in fact, those first ingrained in him during his time with us in this school. The values to which he referred were moral values such as honesty, loyalty and generosity. Living as we do in an age seemingly obsessed with greed, ruthlessness and selfishness, this was a timely message. Mr. McCarthy, in the course of his address, further developed this theme and pointed out the outstanding contribution each of the award winners had made to the life of the school in all its fullness. It was no coincidence, he averred, that all of these students had also excelled in so many other aspects of school life. The evening, which was organised with his customary efficiency by Mr. Brett, concluded with a very pleasant reception attended by the award winners, their parents and their teachers.
We especially congratulate the senior boys who have now left the college to pursue their studies at third-level. We wish them well and look forward to welcoming them back in the future. The award winners are set out below:

Mini Company Trade Fair
In December the two Mini Companies in Transition Year took part in the Schools Enterprise Competition for young entrepreneurs, organised by the Cork City Enterprise Board. Here they displayed their business ideas and products as well as discussing their business plans with the judges of the competition.
This Schools Enterprise competition is open to all schools taking part in the Young Enterprise initiative and was held in Blackpool Shopping Centre where each company set up a display stand and sold their products and ideas.
The pictures show the two companies, Aces Enterprises (who have designed themed wrist bands) and Fymac (who designed seasonal gift hampers), at their display stands. The Aces team won the category prize for Best Team Spirit. Both have now qualified for the regional finals in March.

| Computer Centre 2009-2010 |
|
ECDL
The European Computer Driving License continues to be a central part of the computer curriculum offered to our Fourth and Fifth Years. The qualification is accepted as proof of a significant degree of computer literacy. It is also an entry requirement for a number of third-level courses. In addition, funds raised from the course contribute to funding the purchase of the equipment in the Computer Centre.
Broadband Speed Increase
Our broadband connection has seen a four-fold improvement to 8 Mb/sec. This is very welcome, as the Internet has grown beyond a technical curiosity to become a fundamental teaching aid.
The Dept. of Education and Science had been considering increasing the broadband speed for schools to 100Mb/sec using spare MAN backbone capacity. Despite publishing the names of the first eighty or so schools they intended to connect initially, that proposed roll-out is now being ‘reviewed’. It may be some time before CSN benefits from the proposal…
Network Upgrade
The Computer Centre had its network cabling upgraded to Cat 6 in an effort to ease network bottlenecks. Computers also had their RAM increased. While the bottlenecks have eased, there are still issues with network speed. We make progress, but slowly!

| Music - The Guitar, RTÉ |
|
A big congratulations to 3rd Year Student Colm O’Halloran, who beat off hundreds of guitarists to be crowned champion of ‘The Guitar’ on RTÉ TWO last December. ‘The Guitar’ was a competition for electric guitarists under 17 and the grand prize was a Rory Gallagher guitar.
Colm’s triumphant journey began last April, when he auditioned for the competition in Pro Musica on Oliver Plunkett St. After impressing the judges there, he was selected as one of the sixteen finalists in the contest. Colm, who is self-taught on the electric guitar, travelled to Dublin in May where his final round performance was filmed for TV, along with a short interview.
‘The Guitar’ was screened on RTÉ TWO in December when, each day, one of the 16 finalists was shown at 7pm and on Tuesday 15th of December, it was Colm’s turn. The winner of the competition would be decided by public vote on the RTE ‘The Guitar’ website. The 3rd year Music students helped to make posters, which were posted up around the school, to encourage the C.S.N. students to vote and it seems they, among many others, did! Colm was announced as ‘The Guitar’ winner on a live broadcast on ‘TwoTube’ on Wednesday 23rd of December and was presented with his new guitar by Rory Gallagher’s brother, Dónal.
Colm was thrilled to win the competition and has proudly displayed his new guitar (and his skills!) in school, particularly in Music class! As well as talented, Colm is also extremely generous and is donating his valuable new guitar to the Cystic Fibrosis Association so that they can auction it to raise much needed funds.
A big thank-you, on behalf of Colm, to everyone who voted!
