Extra-Curricular Activities in CSN.
Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh has a long tradition of commitment and endeavour in the area of extra-curricular activities. This initiative forms a fundamental part of the holistic approach to education and personal development that is the basis of what we do. The activities range from the cerebral to the physical and there is something for all our students to take part in.

The activities are arranged in alphabetical order. For more information on the achievements in these activities and other activities look at the Archives section.

Basketball
Basketball is played actively in the school at all levels. There is a First Year League and students go on to take part in local Cork competitions and national competitions at more senior levels.

Chess at CSN
There is a very active and successful chess club in the school comprising pupils from all six years and with teams and individuals competing at all levels. In the last 2 years CSN players have won divisions one and two in the Cork city/county level; Munster under 16 and 19; all-Ireland under 16 and 19; and last year won the Millfield Trophy in the UK for the first time.
The club meets twice weekly at lunch times and in September a big drive is organised to get the new first year students involved. There is also a coaching/strategy session weekly after school to improve standards and to prepare for competition. See our website at www.geocities.com/csnchess.

Computers at CSN
The Computer Centre and the Computer Society has been a thriving part of CSN since before the development of the personal computer. In addition to time-tabled use, the students have access to the Computer Centre at lunch-times and after school. A system of student supervisors is used to monitor usage and has proven to be an invaluable way of giving responsibility to students in the control and management of their own activities.

Debating.
Debating in Spiorad Naomh has been a vigorous and successful activity for many years. Teams from the school have competed in a wide range of competitions during that time. In recent years it has concentrated on the Schools' Competition, run in Munster by the Philosophical Society, UCC. The school has been successful in the regional, national and international legs of the competition, culminating in its victory in the Schools' Observer Mace Competition - the first Irish school to do so. The school also participates in the Cork Speakers' Club Competition, which it has won on many occasions at both Junior and Senior level.

The Debating Society offers a forum for aspiring debaters to practice their skills for personal development or for competition. It is organised and run by a committee of officers, all students, elected by the members of the Society. The Society meets on Tuesdays and debates issues of topical interest, as proposed by the members.

Fishing, more particularly trout fishing, is a recent addition to the extra-curricular activities of the school. The activity consists of visits to various lakes during the fishing season. It is, of necessity, limited by the fact that the fishing season overlaps the school year only at the beginning and at the end. Nevertheless, quite a number of avid fishermen are to be found among the ranks of Spiorad Naomh students and staff.

Hurling has been prominent in CSN since the early 1980's and the school now enters both Cork and Munster competitions. The most notable success of recent times has been winning the Munster B championship in 1991 and subsequent participation in the All Ireland final. Among the CSN hurlers of recent times who have gone on achieve success at inter-county level are Brian Murphy (now playing senior football with Kildare) who captained the Cork minor hurlers to All Ireland success and Ronan Curran who is a member of the current Cork senior panel.

Teams from the school have won the competition on a number of occasions in the recent past. Students from the school also compete in international competitions such as the Australian, American and Canadian Maths Olympiads. Students have competed with distinction in all three competitions, often against as many as 25,000 competitors.

The Mountaineering Club is open to anyone from Second Year p who is prepared to get up at dawn on Sundays and slog through bog, mud, streams, nervous sheep and bare rock in rain, hail, sleet, snow and occasional sun for six or seven hours and pay for the privilege! Kerry is our favourite destination with occasional forays to the Galtees, Comeraghs and a tri-annual expedition to North Wales. You can see more of the exploits of the club at our website: www.csnmc.cjb.net.
